AVIF vs JPG: what changes
You saved an AVIF image and want to open it in software, a form or a network that only accepts JPG. The still photo is converted with your browser’s decoder. JPG cannot store transparency or HDR: transparent areas use your chosen background colour and the result may be larger. It does not recover detail or preserve EXIF or GPS.
| Feature | AVIF | JPG |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | HEIF image compressed with AV1. | Compressed photo (JPEG). |
| Compression | Lossy or lossless; efficient for photos and graphics. | Lossy: very light; every re-save loses a little detail. |
| Transparency, animation or sound | Can store transparency and sequences; only still images are accepted here. | No transparency or animation. |
| Compatibility | Compatible current browsers; older versions and many forms cannot open it. | Universal: phones, websites, email and print. |
| Best for | Website images you want to save as JPG. | Photos to share, websites and email. |
