Remove background: common questions
Which photos work best?
Those with a clear subject: a person, a product, a pet or an object that stands apart from the background. With backgrounds very similar to the subject, several subjects mixed together or very fine hair, the edge may be less precise; try the “Very soft” edge.
How do I remove the background and make it white?
Choose “White” under Background: the photo downloads as a JPG with a white background. “Colour” lets you pick any other; “Transparent” downloads a PNG with no background.
Does my photo lose quality?
It is not shrunk: the result has the same size as your photo. The mask is computed at a smaller size and fitted to the real edges of the image before it is applied.
What removes the background?
U²-Net in its small version (u2netp, Apache 2.0 licence) and onnxruntime-web (MIT licence), served from our own site. The first time about 19 MB are downloaded and your browser keeps them; after that it starts straight away, even offline while the page stays open.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. The tool runs inside your browser: files are read and processed on your device and are not sent to Cocuyo or to any third party. You can check it in your browser’s network tools: your file is not sent.
Is it really free?
Yes. You can try it before signing up; to download the result we ask for a free account, with no subscription. Your free account comes with 30 welcome uses; after that, each use costs 1 credit (top-ups from US$1), and they are unlimited with Basic or Pro. It never adds a watermark.
What are the limits?
JPG, PNG or WebP up to 30 MB and 40 megapixels per file, not animated. Files are processed one at a time so the tab stays responsive, even on a phone.
