Percentage calculator: common questions
How do you work out a percentage of a number?
Divide the percentage by 100 and multiply by the number: 15% of 80 is 15 ÷ 100 × 80 = 12.
Why does a 20% cut followed by a 20% rise not give the same price?
Because each percentage applies to a different amount: 100 − 20% = 80, and 80 + 20% = 96. Going from 80 back to 100 takes a 25% rise. The reverse percentage does that calculation.
How do I calculate the percentage increase between two values?
Subtract the initial value from the final one, divide by the initial value and multiply by 100: from 80 to 100 is (100 − 80) ÷ 80 × 100 = 25%. If it is negative, it is a decrease.
