Image to text (OCR): common questions
How accurate is it?
With printed, straight, sharp text in good light it usually gets most words right. It makes more mistakes with handwriting, skewed or blurry photos, low contrast or very decorative fonts. That is why you can fix the text before copying it, and we show the average confidence.
Does it work with scanned PDFs?
Yes, if you first turn the pages into images with our PDF to JPG tool. This tool reads JPG, PNG or WebP images.
Does it keep the document layout?
It extracts the text with its line breaks, or joined into paragraphs if you choose. It does not keep bold, tables or columns: that would need rebuilding the document.
What reads the text?
Tesseract OCR (Apache 2.0 licence) compiled to WebAssembly through tesseract.js, inside your browser. The first time, the engine and the Spanish and English data (about 12 MB in total) download from our own site and your browser keeps them; the image is never sent to any server.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. The tool runs inside your browser: files are read and processed on your device and are not sent to Cocuyo or to any third party. You can check it in your browser’s network tools: your file is not sent.
Is it really free?
Yes. You can try it before signing up; to keep using it, we ask for a free account, with no subscription. It uses no credits and does not count toward your 30 welcome uses: it has no usage cap.
What are the limits?
JPG, PNG or WebP up to 30 MB and 40 megapixels per file, not animated. Files are processed one at a time so the tab stays responsive, even on a phone.
