Compress a video for WhatsApp

Medium quality and 720p, which is usually enough to look good on a phone, are already selected (they are also Compress video’s own defaults). Add your video, press Compress and download a lighter file to send on WhatsApp, without uploading it to any server.

It is saved as MP4 (H.264 with AAC sound) if your browser can create it: Chrome and Edge on Windows, Mac and Android, and Safari. If it cannot, you will see the MP4 option turned off and why; it is never saved in a different format from the one you choose.

HOW TO DO IT

Three steps.

  1. Add your video

Up to 10 MP4, MOV or WebM videos your browser can play, up to 300 MB and 10 minutes each.

  2. Keep 720p and medium quality

They come pre-selected. If it is still too large, go down to 480p or Light quality; if you do not need the sound, remove it.

  3. Download and send

Download the video (or all of them in a ZIP) and attach it in WhatsApp from your gallery or as a document.

WHY

Why compress it before sending

WhatsApp compresses it anyway

When you send it as a video, WhatsApp compresses it again its own way. If you prepare it first, you choose what is lost and it takes less time to send over mobile data.

720p in a chat

In a chat window, a 720p video looks sharp and takes far less space than the original recorded in 4K or 1080p.

Shorter beats over-compressed

Cutting what you do not need reduces the size without lowering the quality. Trim it first in your phone’s gallery or with Trim video.

REAL LIMITS

What your browser needs

WebCodecs

Compress video uses WebCodecs, found in recent versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. If yours lacks it, the tool tells you.

MP4 or WebM

It is saved as MP4 (H.264), the most compatible format, if your browser can create it. If not, it is saved as WebM and the tool warns you before starting.

Up to 10 minutes and 300 MB

Per video. Videos over 10 minutes or 300 MB cannot be opened here (nor in Trim video): cut them first in your phone’s gallery or in your editor. Always keep the original: every compression loses some detail.

Compress a video for WhatsApp: common questions

What resolution should I use for WhatsApp?

720p at medium quality is usually enough to look good on a phone. If the video has a lot of motion or small text, try High quality.

What if I want to send it without losing quality?

WhatsApp lets you send it as a document: it arrives as is, without recompression, but it is as large as the original.

What if it is still too big after compressing?

Lower the resolution to 480p or the quality to Light, tick “Remove the sound” if you do not need it, or keep only the part that matters. The original is not touched, so you can try several times and keep the one that looks best.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes, in recent versions of mobile browsers. If your browser cannot open the video or lacks WebCodecs, the tool tells you when you add it.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. Everything happens inside your browser: the file is read and processed on your device and is not sent to Cocuyo or to any third party. You can check it in your browser’s network tools: your file is not sent.

Is it really free?

Yes. You can try it before signing up; to download the result we ask for a free account, with no subscription. Your free account comes with 30 welcome uses; after that, each use costs 1 credit (top-ups from US$1), and they are unlimited with Basic or Pro. It never adds a watermark.
