Word of the day

Every day there is a secret 5-letter word, the same for everyone. You get 6 tries, and after each one the colours tell you which letters are in the word and where. Want more? Free play gives you random words with no limit.

HOW TO PLAY

Three steps.

  1. Type a word

    Type a real 5-letter word with the on-screen keyboard or your own keyboard and press Enter.

  2. Read the colours

    Green: the letter is in the right spot. Striped amber: it is in the word, in another spot. Grey: it is not in the word. The keyboard is coloured the same way, so you can see which letters are left.

  3. Solve it in 6 tries

    Use the clues to close in. When you finish you see your streak and how many tries you usually need, and you can copy your result as coloured squares to share it.

Word of the day: common questions

Is the word of the day the same for everyone?

Yes. It changes at midnight UTC and is the same on every device. Each day has its own number (#1, #2…).

How do repeated letters work?

Each colour counts one copy of a letter. If you type a letter twice and the word has it only once, one is coloured and the other shows grey.

Why is my word not accepted?

Only 5-letter words from our list count, so nobody can test random letter combinations. The list is large but it is not a complete dictionary, so a rare word may be missing.

Are my game and streak saved?

Yes, only on this device: if you reload, you carry on where you were. Copying your result sends nothing anywhere: it only goes to your clipboard.
