Blur background: common questions
Is it the same as a phone’s portrait mode?
It is similar: it separates the subject from the background and blurs only the background. It does not measure the distance of each point like some cameras do, so the blur is even across the whole background.
Why is there no halo around the subject?
When the background is blurred, the subject’s pixels are ignored, so its colours do not spread into the background and the outline stays clean.
What if the subject is not detected well?
If part of the subject ends up blurred or a piece of background stays sharp, try another edge or a photo where the subject stands out more. It does not work well for group shots or scenes with no clear subject.
What removes the background?
U²-Net in its small version (u2netp, Apache 2.0 licence) and onnxruntime-web (MIT licence), served from our own site. The first time about 19 MB are downloaded and your browser keeps them; after that it starts straight away, even offline while the page stays open.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. The tool runs inside your browser: files are read and processed on your device and are not sent to Cocuyo or to any third party. You can check it in your browser’s network tools: your file is not sent.
Is it really free?
Yes. You can try it before signing up; to download the result we ask for a free account, with no subscription. Your free account comes with 30 welcome uses; after that, each use costs 1 credit (top-ups from US$1), and they are unlimited with Basic or Pro. It never adds a watermark.
What are the limits?
JPG, PNG or WebP up to 30 MB and 40 megapixels per file, not animated. Files are processed one at a time so the tab stays responsive, even on a phone.
