BMI calculator: common questions
How is BMI calculated?
Weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. For example, 70 kg and 1.75 m give a BMI of 22.9.
Who does it not apply to?
Under-18s, who use percentiles by age, pregnancy, and very muscular or older people, for whom BMI can mislead. Some Asian populations use other cut-off points.
Does it replace a consultation?
No. BMI does not measure fat or where it is stored. It is a reference: your healthcare professional will assess your case.
Is my data sent to a server?
No. The numbers, dates and names you type are calculated in your browser and are not sent to Cocuyo or to any third party.
Is it really free?
Yes. You can try it before signing up; to keep using it, we ask for a free account, with no subscription. It uses no credits and does not count toward your 30 welcome uses: it has no usage cap.
