Encode and decode URL: common questions
How is a URL different from a component?
A full URL preserves delimiters such as /, ? and #. A component encodes those symbols so they belong to the value.
Does + always mean a space?
Only in query value mode. In component or URL mode, + remains literal.
Does it open or repair links?
No. It only encodes text. Invalid percent sequences or UTF-8 cause an error; destination availability is not checked.
Is my text sent to a server?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser as you type; the text is not sent to Cocuyo or any third party and is not stored. You can check it in your browser’s network tools: your file is not sent.
Is it really free?
Yes. You can try it before signing up; to keep using it, we ask for a free account, with no subscription. It uses no credits and does not count toward your 30 welcome uses: it has no usage cap.
